Toyota MR2 AW11 Samsung Case
The first-generation Toyota MR2—designated the "AW11" and produced from 1984 to 1989—is a landmark, mid-engined sports car that brought exotic handling and accessible, Japanese reliability to the masses. Born from a design project aimed at creating an enjoyable yet remarkably fuel-efficient commuter car, Toyota brilliantly transformed the blueprint into an angular, origami-styled wedge that prioritized pure driving dynamics. Nestled directly behind the cabin was the legendary, high-revving 1.6-liter "4A-GE" dual-overhead-cam inline-four engine—complete with TVIS (Toyota Variable Induction System)—which sent a spirited 112 horsepower to the rear wheels. To ensure its featherlight, 2,300-pound chassis carved corners like a true racing machine, Toyota collaborated with Lotus engineering legend Roger Becker to fine-tune the MacPherson strut suspension and sharp, manual rack-and-pinion steering. Later refreshed with an optional T-top roof and a potent, roots-type supercharged variant pumping out 145 horsepower, the original AW11 MR2 remains a beloved, analog icon of the 1980s, proving that you didn't need a supercar budget to experience the sublime balance of a mid-engine layout.
